One of the major challenges introducing a new system and technology is to identify problems in time and to take the according measures. The initial introduction of ETCS (European Train Control System) Level 2, implemented on newly-built and existing tracks in Austria, took place in the context of a very ambitious, company-wide organised programme.
ETCS Level 2 sets particularly high standards concerning quality and availability of the communication bearer service GSM-R. The verification of TSI conformity, especially the "quality of service" is a requirement for homologation.
The new, predominantly subterraneously built, ETCS Level 2 railway track of approximately 45 km was equipped with state-of the-art, redundant communication technology, in order to provide the requirements for a safe and reliable operation process, even in case of emergency.
